  1. There are 729 possible combinations where the candidate ticket’s numbers are all 1 above, equal to, or 1 below the target number. So for any given ticket that matches this criteria there is a 0.137% chance of it being the correct number.

  2. Back in the 80’s my mom bought a ticket for a big lottery drawing (nowhere near the numbers we have nowadays, but big for then). She got 5 of the 6 numbers. The 6th number was off by one — it was her age and she had just had a birthday a few weeks before. If she hadn’t just had her birthday, she would have won. (With 5 numbers, she won $1,500 and used it to take a trip overseas with my dad.)

  3. Try to remember, you didn’t lose by being “off” by one number here or there. you were off by potentially 69 other numbers. the “order” of numbers is an illusion.

think of it this way, if you replaced each number with an emoji- you couldnt be off by any specific amount because they are symbols and random. Pictures of numbers on the ball are the same.

  4. I like Mark Cuban’s advice from a few years ago:

“Cuban shared the advice he gave his local paper, The Dallas Morning News, which is just as applicable to Friday’s winner:

[The first thing you should do is] hire a tax attorney.
Don’t take the lump sum. You don’t want to blow it all in one spot.
If you weren’t happy yesterday, you won’t be happy tomorrow. It’s money. It’s not happiness.
If you were happy yesterday, you are going to be a lot happier tomorrow. It’s money. Life gets easier when you don’t have to worry about the bills.
Tell all your friends and relatives no. They will ask. Tell them no. If you are close to them, you already know who needs help and what they need. Feel free to help SOME, but talk to your accountant before you do anything and remember this, no one needs $1 million for anything. No one needs $100,000 for anything. Anyone who asks is not your friend.
You don’t become a smart investor when you win the lottery. Don’t make investments. You can put it in the bank and live comfortably. Forever. You will sleep a lot better knowing you won’t lose money.

He also shared one last bonus tip with Business Insider: “Be nice. No one likes a mean billionaire. :)”

Presumably, that goes for multimillionaires as well. “

  5. The crazy thing is that this is common! I mean, relatively speaking. It’s quite a bit more likely to happen to you than actually winning. On average, for every person that wins, 64 people will be one off on every number, 32 will be one off on 5 and match the 6th, 16 will be one off on 4 and match 2, 8 one off on 3 and match 3, 4 one off on 2 and match 4, and 2 one off on 1 and match 5.

This means that (on average) for every person that wins the lottery, there are 126 people that have tickets that are some permutation of “every/most numbers off by 1”

  6. It’s sad because people really do think of the game this way. OP I know you understand because you’ve made it into a joke but I cant tell you how many people I’ve seen with gambling problems who would have your ticket and lose sleep over it for weeks.

    I always hear:

“Oh but I was so close, look!”

No. No you weren’t. You’ve matched 2 numbers when you need to match 6. In fact, you dont win anything with this ticket…

Remember folks, at the end of the day they are just numbers selected randomly. You’re not “due” to win. Your numbers being “close” to the winning numbers isnt a sign….you either choose the right numbers or the wrong numbers. It’s literally just complete chance.

Do what you want with your money! But understand that the game doesn’t owe you a damn thing and chances are you’ll never hit the jackpot. I’m fun at parties.
